metrosoleil.lametro.fr: the online tool that calculates the solar potential of your roof

Grenoble-Alpes Métropole aims to increase production of photovoltaic electricity by a factor of 6 on its territory by 2030. In order to convince individuals of the interest of equipping themselves, helping them to take the step, the Metropolis has just launch an online simulation tool, easy, neutral and free of charge: Metrosoleil. This one calculates the solar potential of each roof, with financial simulation to support it. At the same time, a quality charter is signed with solar panel installers, in order to provide all the necessary guarantees to users.

Based on an IGN map, the “metrosoleil.lametro.fr” service is first and foremost a map of the Grenoble urban area, where all the roofs are materialized: from the brightest (which offers a high solar potential) to the darkest (low potential) depending on orientation and shade carried by mountains or buildings. All owners*, whether they are private individuals,
landlords or companies, can thus discover the sunshine power of their roofs.

But that’s not all. MétroSoleil also offers a financial simulation of a installation, whether for the production of hot water (solar thermal) or electricity (solar photovoltaic). All you have to do is enter your address and ask for a quote. Not need to register or leave your contact information. No risk of commercial solicitation. The service is anonymous, neutral and free of charge. This simulation makes it possible to visualize the cost of the installation, but also its cost-effectiveness, i.e. the savings that can be achieved. Thermal solar panels allow to cover on average 70% of the hot water needs of a household of four people, i. e. one savings of about 200 euros per year. As for electricity production through photovoltaic panels, it allows to receive every year, during 20 years, a cash inflow through the sale of the energy produced.

Once the simulation is completed, the Internet user has two options:

  • Contact the Local Energy and Climate Agency (ALEC) for further advice and be supported in the installation project
  • Consult the list of installers selected by the Metropolis. These local companies, which have signed a quality charter and have all the necessary certifications and assurances, are committed to provide a clear and complete quotation.

*The IGN reference map used dates back to 2015, so buildings that have appeared since then cannot be taken into account

  • The Project

A city operating entirely on clean energy. In theory, it's possible. But in real life? How to integrate new solutions in existing buildings, systems and people's lives? What are the technical, economic or social barriers? And how to overcome these? That's what we've learned by doing in 20 projects in Grenoble and Amsterdam.
