Waternet

Presentation

logo-waternetWaternet works for the Municipality of Amsterdam and for the Regional Public Water Authority Amstel, Gooi en Vecht. Waternet is the first company in the Netherlands that combines all water services in one organization. Waternet is responsible for flood protection, drinking water supply, sewerage, wastewater treatment, surface water quality and quantity control. Waternet serves Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, and surroundings. Waternet is an innovative public company applying innovative concepts and technologies to the urban water cycle.

Role in City-zen

Waternet performs two City-zen projects:

  • Supply of cooling with cold from drinking water. Cold will be extracted from the public drinking water infrastructure. This cold will be supplied to the Sanquin pharmaceutical plant via an ATES (aquifer thermal energy storage) system. This will result in a 1100 tonne / year CO2 reduction compared to conventional cooling machines.
  • New sanitation’ waste water treatment and biorefinery: a local small-scale waste water treatment facility based on biological processes will convert organic waste into biogas and nutrients for plant fertilization (phosphate and nitrate). The system will be a net generator of energy.

  • The Project

A city operating entirely on clean energy. In theory, it's possible. But in real life? How to integrate new solutions in existing buildings, systems and people's lives? What are the technical, economic or social barriers? And how to overcome these? That's what we've learned by doing in 20 projects in Grenoble and Amsterdam.
