Circular and sustainable Buiksloterham

The city district of Buiksloterham (Amsterdam) – right across the IJ river on the backside of Central Station – is aiming to be circular and sustainable. In this area a grassroot,  hackable, organic area development is taking the place of traditional property development of this former brownfield area. This new form of development ask for new forms of cooperation, new roles and a new level playing field.

City-zen partner Waternet is a leading company in this development and will start a local bio refinery – harvesting nutrients and energy out of the local waste water of households.

The City Innovation Game is adapted to this local challenge and will be launched during Isocarp. All stakeholders in this area are invited to join to reinvent Buiksloterham.

A city operating entirely on clean energy. In theory, it's possible. But in real life? How to integrate new solutions in existing buildings, systems and people's lives? What are the technical, economic or social barriers? And how to overcome these? That's what we've learned by doing in 20 projects in Grenoble and Amsterdam.
